Neuropsychological Assessment

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation uses the assessment techniques of clinical psychology and neuropsychology to assess learning and developmental challenges; to identify their underpinnings; to offer a diagnosis; and to make recommendations for treatment and for management.

What is the focus of this evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation will take a holistic focus and will assess multiple aspects of a child's or an adult's functioning. It will include intellectual assessment, academic testing, emotional assessment, and assessment of a broad range of neurological domains (such as memory, language, visual-spatial skills, and executive functioning).

What can you expect at the conclusion of the evaluation?

At the conclusion of neurological evaluation, parents need to be given more than a label. Parents should gain a better understanding of their child's developmental profile: their strengths and challenges, and how their child experiences the world. Parents should also expect to be supported in translating this understanding into a plan for helping their child with whatever challenges have prompted the evaluation. The same results can be expected our adult clients.

What happens next?

In addition to direct assessment, neuropsychologists at ICCD are available to collaborate with families in the long term. A family may choose to bring the clinician into the special education process by inviting them to observe the child in school or to participate in a team meeting. They may also wish for the clinician to consult with other professionals involved in the care of the child: teachers, therapists, and health care professionals. Again, our adult clients can expect the same level of long term collaboration.

Adult Assessment Program

Parents, teachers and other caregivers are increasingly aware of children presenting with ADHD, Asperger's Disorder, learning disabilities and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Not long ago, children with such conditions were too often ignored or dismissed as being "lazy", "odd", or "not intelligent." As a result, many adolescents, young adults and older adults live with undiagnosed challenges in attention, learning, or social comprehension.

Even though there has been a rapid growth and development of services provided to children with these conditions, supports and services to adolescents and adults transitioning to the world of work or colleges has not parelled this growth.

The Adult Assessment Program (AAP) at the ICCD is a direct response to the gaps in the service delivery system for young and older adults with learning, attention, and developmental disorders. The AAP serves three primary groups:

  • Young adults with identified needs who are transitioning out of the public school special education system.
  • College, graduate, and professional school students with learning needs.
  • Adults who have struggled with attention, task management, learning or socialization, but who have never been formally assessed.

TEAM EVALUATIONS

Multi-disciplinary evaluations at the ICCD offer a unique opportunity to bring professionals together around complex clinical issues. Teams may include neuropsychologists, developmental pediatricians and neurogeneticists, behaviorists, speech-language therapists and special educators. These evaluations are designed to quickly bring multiple clinicians together around clinical questions, often of an acute nature, and to offer prompt feedback and interventions. Children with a variety of diagnoses or suspected diagnoses are candidates for team evaluations. These include autism and autism spectrum disorders, such as Asperger's Syndrome; ADHD and executive functioning disorders; children with complex learning disorders such as Nonverbal Learning Disability; and children with genetic or neurological disorders.

If you believe that a child may be a candidate for multi-disciplinary evaluation, please contact Ms. Brianne Harris at 781-619-1505. Each referral will be reviewed by a clinician for eligibility. Every effort is made to rapidly schedule these cases.

Educational Services

ICCD provides direct services to a number of children with complex learning needs and also trains and supervises special educators through our Center. Services include direct tutorial in individual and group formats; program evaluation and consultation; and parent and community education.

Medical Services

ICCD is fortunate to have a pediatric neurogeneticist onsite who specializes in the medical management of children with a variety of genetic and developmental disorders. Our Medical Director offers diagnostic services to evaluate medical and genetic conditions that may underlie developmental challenges, as well as comprehensive care and psychopharmacologic management for developmentally disabled children.

Speech and Language

ICCD offers speech-language assessment and therapy for children from pre-school through adolescence.  Speech-language therapy is offered to children with both fundamental communication difficulties and to children with more subtle language challenges that may undermine verbal expression or the development of written language.

Behavioral Services

ICCD offers services that are provided primarily in the child's home or community school and are tailored to fit the unique profile of each child and his/her family. Parent consultation is provided weekly or bi-weekly to foster the development of cooperative relationships with families. Goals for parent consultation include helping parents understand their child's challenges and educational needs, assisting them in the implementation of behavioral interventions to address feeding problems, sleep disturbances, and other behavioral concerns, and guiding the generalization of gains across environments.
